Mother and Child: Henry Moore's West Dean Tapestries
April 12, 2008-January 11, 2009
Lecture: “Henry Moore and the Subject of Mothers and Children”
Inspired by the birth of his only child, Henry Moore’s West Dean Tapestries are a testament to the artist’s enduring interest in the representation of mothers and children throughout his long career. Manifesting qualities associated with Moore’s abstract modernism and the artist’s fascination with universal themes expressed in the arts of alternative cultures, his depictions of mothers and children have been studied in terms of their relation to Jungian ideas and the representation of an archetype. We will look at and examine Moore’s depiction of the mother and child motif in the cartoons and tapestries in relation to his sculptural works as expressive of ideas that transformed our understanding about the nature of children and childhood that gave new significance and meaning to relationships between mothers and children.
Dr. Hopson’s lecture is offered in conjunction with the Figge exhibition Mother & Child: Henry Moore’s West Dean Tapestries.
