Strange Matrix 80.0034

A matrix suggests something from which something else originates or a material in which something is enclosed or embedded. Strange Matrix is an abstraction composed of layers of color and artist's marks that suggest a dense depth of field. Reginald Neal was both a printmaker and a painter. He studied painting with Arnold Blanch and Adolf Dehn, and later chaired the art department at Rutgers University. His style varied over the years, shifting from representational and narrative painting to abstractions such as Strange Matrix that layer color and play with the surface of the canvas.
