As a follower of Jungian psychology and a student of semiotics (a philosophical theory of the function of signs and symbols in language), Jamie Brunson is interested in exploring the relationship between pure shape, and shape read as sign or symbol in art. In this painting, Brunson incorporates a pitcher and hammer, a heart and knife, and a branch and hatchet, symbols and emblems drawn from contemporary and historical sources that depend on instant recognition to convey a message. These symbols are set in house-shaped spaces surrounded by thickly furrowed paint. These images remind the viewer that we are culturally programmed to assume and deduce too quickly, that our culture tends to disregard introspection and contemplation.
