Georges Schreiber

U.S., b. Belgian 1904-1977
The List, 1941 45.0826

The List presents a timeless reminder of the horrors of war. In it, mothers, sisters, sons, and brothers strain to see the names posted on a casualty list. Although the war had been going on since 1939 America did not become involved until December, 1941, when Pearl Harbor was bombed. Painter, lithographer and writer, Schreiber studied in Rome, Paris, Berlin, and Düsseldorf before emigrating to the U.S. in 1928. During WW II the U.S. government used his talents to create art for posters promoting the war effort. Schrieber also created a series of historical paintings for the U.S. Navy.
