Walter Quirt
U.S. 1902-1968The Man who made a Dollar 61.1028
Born in Michigan, educated in Wisconsin and long time resident of Minnesota, where he taught until his death in 1968, Quirt spent time on WPA art projects in New York and also attached himself to the surrealists and to a group of artists with a social agenda. His work frequently uses large areas of white interspersed with swirling spatial configurations or grid-like forms. Quirt wished to use the older forms of surrealism, free association and dream imagery, "to explore the language of the emotions on problems the public feels but has not the means for projecting into actualities."
