Scale: Ceramic Forms and Photographic Landscapes


In ceramic artist Gerry Eskin’s world, big is best. Although his primary interest remains ceramics, he has returned to an early interest, photography. Intrigued by digital imaging, Eskin creates large-scale panoramic prints of landscape imagery. While this exhibition features both ceramic and photographic media, all the pieces share an artistic theme of monumental scale.

His ceramic works include massive platters painted with geometric designs inspired by ancient Anasazi pottery; towering columnar forms; and massive anthropomorphic vessels whose shape is informed by Middle Eastern sarcophagi. His photographic panoramas depict spectacular geological formations and desert landscape vistas near Moab, Utah. The ceramic pieces and photographic panels create an environmental installation evoking sacred mountain landscapes and their relation to burial rituals and the spiritual function of ceramic forms.
