Thomas Hart Benton

U.S. 1889-1975
Huck Finn 85.0003

Taken from one of the figure groups for Benton's Missouri State Capitol murals, Huck Finn, along with Frankie and Johnnie, and Jesse James presents a story that is deeply imbedded in American folklore. Mark Twain's The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn was first published in 1885. Benton read the tale from start to finish every two or three years. He said, "With the spirits of Huck and Jim pushing me I have been up and down the Mississippi many times. Though I traveled on big boats rather than intimately by raft I like to believe I've caught glimpses of them. It's certain they're still there behind some island or up some creek."
