Murat Brierre

Haiti 1938-1988
Le Sagittaire en Demon (Sagitarius and Demon) 67.0016

Brièrre's basic tool is the forge where he cuts and works old oil drums or whatever metal is available into inspired pieces of sculpture. For several years, Brièrre studied painting and drawing under DeWitt Peters at Le Centre d'Art in Port-au-Prince, developing a complete mastery of the use of the line. However, he gave up painting in order to concentrate on metal sculpture, metal for Brièrre being "astrologically auspicious." He has a vibrant insight into the mysterious and mystical forces of life and a respect for his religious heritage that he translates into forceful and evocative three-dimensional objects.
