Francisco Antonio, asc. Vallejo
Mexico ca. 1721/22-1785Mary, Queen of Heaven 25.0295
In this painting, the Virgin Mary is shown crowned, that is, as the Queen of Heaven. The garment that she wears, with its accompanying pearl jewelry, suggests that the picture is a reproduction of a cult image, such as the image of Our Lady of the Boat, depicted by Miguel de Herrera. It may have been originally used as one of a number of small pictures set into a large altar ensemble, each one making a reference to a specific cult image or sculpture. The work was probably used in private devotion. Vallejo was enormously prolific and inherited Cabrera's dominance of large-scale decorative commissions after Cabrera died in 1768. His late career focused on idealized treatments of the Madonna and intimate devotional subjects.
