Grant Wood
U.S. 1891-1942Quivering Aspen 65.0002
In 1916 Wood returned to Cedar Rapids after living in Chicago for a year. He finished some of his earlier sketches and began painting scenes around the area. The paintings of this early period are attempts to interpret an impressionist aesthetic, concentrating on the effects of motion and light. He would have been familiar with great examples of impressionist painting in the Art Institute collection. This scene was painted for his sister Nan on her 18th birthday as a surprise.
