Grant Wood

U.S. 1891-1942
The Little Chapel Chancelade 65.0006

The location of this scene is unknown. According to Nan Wood Graham's notes, one of Grant's fellow students at the Académie Julien lived in a castle in Spain. Grant was invited to visit him and while there, made this sketch. However, this could also be a scene in France. It is heavily painted with a palette knife, as are many of Wood's early paintings, producing a thick impasto or opaque layer.
