Grant Wood

U.S. 1891-1942
Truck Garden, Moret 65.0003

Wood's second trip to Europe in 1923-1924 produced many sketches not only of scenes in Paris but of nearby provinces. Moret-sur-Loing, a medieval town near Fontainbleau southeast of Paris, was frequently painted by the Impressionists Monet, Renoir, and Sisley. This scene of a truck garden (a garden grown for town markets) near Moret is painted with the clear light and the brushstrokes of the Impressionists in mind.
