Murat Brierre
Haiti 1938-1988Untitled (Sunburst) 90.0012
Murat Brièrre was one of Haiti's most well-known artists. Georges Liautaud is considered the country's master of metal sculptures. Brièrre was his first student. Prior to becoming a professional artist, Murat Brièrre worked as a carpenter and black smith, among other trades. He painted in his free time. When fellow painter Rigaud Benoit introduced Brièrre to the Centre d'Art in 1966, he turned to sculpture. Brièrre, like his teacher Liautaud, went on to influence future generations of sculptors. He was the first to create iron works of sunbursts that have facial expressions, such as the subject of this work. This piece also shows the angular lines that were characteristic of the artist's early works. Brièrre was known as a painter and sculptor, but not a printmaker. He most likely used this linoleum print as a study for a later sculpture in iron.
